PBL Scores, 9/7/15

Our pinch-writer’s back in the saddle again for a day!  (And based on the writeups, it seems the pinch-writer is a little punchy…)

Jacksonville DragonsKnoxville SmokiesJACKSONVILLE DRAGONS 11, KNOXVILLE SMOKIES 3

The Smokies got things going today in Jacksonville scoring in the top of the first on a series of infield singles, but the Dragons had a fire in their belly and cashed in on a two-out error by Campo-the-Second with three runs in the bottom of the first. Hopps reached first base on Campo-2’s error and was doubled home by Hartley. A pair of singles by Taliaferro and Leon scored two more runs. The Dragons never looked back.

Both teams managed 1-2-3 innings until the Dragons came to the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Taliaferro (pronounced “Tolliver” in the Williamsburg tradition) doubled to left and scored on Leon’s single. Unfortunately, Leon tripped over first base, rolling his ankle, and had to leave the game. After the game, Manager Harley Davidson said Leon is day-to-day and unlikely to be placed on the DL. Goodwin came in to pinch-run for Leon and moved to second when Canez walked.

Smokies manager Snuff Wallace had seen enough from starting pitcher Jacques at that point and replaced him with Tile, who proceeded to reward his skipper with a wild pitch that moved both runners into scoring position. Tile did manage to induce a pop-up out from Herdt before Mount singled down the right field line scoring both runners. Teachout lined out followed by a towering home run by Kapoor to deep left center. Hopps grounded out and Hartley popped out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Dragons played move-the-line baseball, scoring two runs on a pair of hits, a walk, and a fielder’s choice, and another run on a double play ball.

The Smokies attempted to mount rallies in the eighth and ninth innings, but fell well short. In the eighth, Gomez, pinch hitting for Carlo, went to second on an error by Dragons third baseman Taliaferro, moved to third on Johnson’s fly out to right, and scored on a ground out by Blair. Bryant led off the ninth with a home run to deep left field, but his teammates were unable to follow suit and the Smokies lost.

California SharksSilver City OutlawsCALIFORNIA SHARKS 8, SILVER CITY OUTLAWS 2

The good news for the Silver City Outlaws is that their right and left fielders found a box labeled “big-hit bats” in the back of an old storage area in The Corral today. The bad news is that the box contained only two bats and each proved good for only a single home run. Wason used his in the bottom of the second and hit a solo home run deep into the right center stands. Whittier used his in the bottom of the eighth and homered to deep left.

The Sharks came by their runs more conventionally and managed eight in total for an easy victory. Ortiz scored on a sacrifice fly (by Smyth) in the top of third after getting on base with a double, and moving to third on a ground ut. Mote hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth (Oller triple, Nix walk).

In the top of the seventh, three walks (by two pitchers) set the Sharks up for two runs on an Oller triple (after Ortiz and Corona walked) and a Nix ground out (scoring Smyth). Mote provided the capper with a solo shot in the top of the eighth.

Jackson HammerheadsOrlando CalrissiansJACKSON HAMMERHEADS 4, ORLANDO CALRISSIANS 2

The home team started off with a bang today when Orlando’s Nabors hit a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately, [insert bad Fourth of July joke here, even though it’s supposed to be September] and the Calrissians lost the game anyway.

In the top of the third the Hammerheads showed their teeth, moved the line, and scored Aripse when an error by third baseman Figueroa bit the Calrissians in the [cloud] and Righter on a ground ball single by Sisco. In the top of the fifth, Deason tripled deep to left center and was sent home on a Westerberg ground out.

Errors plagued the Calrissians in the top of the seventh. Cianciarulo started off the inning on first base after another Figueroa error and scored on an error by center fielder Elias, who was attempting to field a single by Westerberg.

Jackson had some pitching woes in the bottom of the eighth when Warrant threw a wild pitch and his replacement Turnbull balked, but Orlando was only able to score a single run (Defoor on a Figueroa single).

Hammerheads designated hitter Righter suffered from food poisoning today and was removed from the game after batting in the fourth. He is expected to return tomorrow.
