SILVER CITY OUTLAWS 5, SALT LAKE SAMURAI 4
If you’re the Silver City Outlaws, this isn’t the game you wanted. With less than three weeks remaining in the season, the Outlaws’ place in the postseason is almost assured. Their magic number for clinching a playoff spot stands at one; one more Silver City win or Milwaukee loss, and the Outlaws are assured a spot in the playoffs. But trailing the first-place California Sharks by 8 1/2 games, their chances of stealing the top spot are very slim indeed.
Obviously, the Outlaws would like to win as many games as they can between now and the end of the season, to finish up on a high note and gather momentum for the playoffs. But more importantly, they want to be sure all their key contributors are healthy and ready to go. Silver City would gladly trade a marginal win or two in exchange for good health.
That’s why today’s win, in which they held off a late charge from the Salt Lake Samurai for a 5-4 triumph, was ultimately Pyrrhic in nature. The Outlaws won the game, but they lost starter Kevin Jennings, who has been on a hot streak lately and is likely to be a key component of their postseason rotation.
“Obviously, what matters about this game is what happened with Kevin,” said Silver City manager John Jarha. “Right now, we’ve just gotta take a deep breath and hope he’s back in time for the playoffs.”
In recent weeks, the 20-year-old Jennings has been spectacular on the hill, and he’s been making a strong case for the #3 spot in the Outlaws’ postseason rotation. He bolstered that case further today with 2 solid shutout innings. But then at the beginning of the 3rd, Samurai 2B Tyler Stark hit a slow roller to the right side. Outlaws 1B Muzz Elliott fielded the ball, while Jennings raced over to cover the bag. They got the out, but Jennings stepped awkwardly on the bag and rolled his ankle. He went down in a heap as a hush fell over The Corral.
Jarha and trainer Randy Naughton rushed to Jennings’ aid. The young starter managed to stand up and insisted on continuing. But even though he was able to strike out SS Mori Motonari, Jennings’ discomfort was plain, and Jarha quickly took him out. The righty’s ankle was already beginning to swell by that time, and he was reportedly unable to walk around the clubhouse without assistance after the game.
“It’s a sprain, a pretty bad one,” said Jarha. “We think that’s all it is, but we’ve got to wait for the tests to come back. And I hate waiting.” The manager said that he hopes Jennings will be back for the postseason.
After Jennings departed, the mood in the stadium remained a bit subdued for the next several innings. The famously rowdy crowd came back to life in the 6th when the Outlaws knocked home a couple of runs off of Samurai starter Grant Fore (7-10) to retake the lead. They roared approval when a Rusty Brewmaker single and a Danny Taylor double drove in two more in the 7th.
Salt Lake 1B Dwayne Parillo put everyone back on edge by clubbing a three-run homer off of Outlaws closer Go Matsumoto in the 8th to cut the lead back down to one. But Matsumoto held the line the rest of the way, and earned his 27th save of the season. Reliever Jon Spradlin (3-0) got the win.
So the Outlaws got their win, and moved to the brink of punching their postseason ticket. But if Jennings isn’t able to make it back, Silver City may look back on this game as one that they’d gladly have lost if their starter had emerged intact.

NEW ORLEANS SAZERACS 5, JACKSON HAMMERHEADS 4 (10 INNINGS)
A 10th-inning home run by SS Al Angel provided the New Orleans Sazeracs with their winning margin in a 5-4 triumph over the Jackson Hammerheads in a game that affected two races. The win gave New Orleans a 1 1/2 game lead in the Expansion World Cup, but dropped Jackson three games back in the wild-card chase.
“We’re right in this thing, but we’ve got to take care of business in games like this,” said Hammerheads manager Bob Henley.
Jackson starter Luke Danton let an early 3-1 lead slip through his fingers, allowing two runs to tie it in the 7th and the go-ahead run to score in the 8th on a double by Sazeracs CF Nate Bishop.
The Heads rallied to tie in the bottom of the inning, with Sazeracs closer Justin O’Brien uncorking a wild pitch that scored the tying run. But O’Brien (5-5) held the line after that until Angel’s 10th-inning blast off of Hilton Sircy (1-6).

ORLANDO CALRISSIANS 4, CAROLINA COMETS 3
The Orlando Calrissians got a walk-off RBI single from RF Bart Law to escape with a 4-3 win over the Carolina Comets, who dropped their fourth game in a row.
The Comets took a brief lead in the 7th inning when LF Stargell Jackson belted a three-run homer to right center and ended the night of Orlando starter Oliver Jones. But the Calrissians tied things up in the bottom of the 7th when SS Dave Hernandez tripled and 3B Erasmo Crofoot’s sac fly scored him.
Then in the 9th, Orlando loaded the bases against Comets starter Deke Slater (7-15) on a single and two walks. That set the stage for Law, who punched a single to the left side to win it.
“I’m really proud of what we’ve done this year,” said Law. “We’re not contenders, not yet, but we’re a lot stronger than we were last year, and we’re bringing it to the line in style.”

MILWAUKEE BEAR CLAWS 6, KALAMAZOO KAZOOS 5
A two-run rally in the 7th inning and a strong performance from the bullpen added up to a 6-5 win for the Milwaukee Bear Claws over the Kalamazoo Kazoos at High Life Stadium.
“Glad to see that we’re still scrapping and clawing out here,” said RF Warren Stefani, who tied the game with an RBI single before stealing second and scoring the winning run on another single by LF Josh Castleberry. “This has been a tough year for us, but we haven’t quit, and that’s huge.”
Starter Rick Chick put Milwaukee in an early hole, allowing two-run homers to Kazoos CF Damian Mash and LF Willis Parker in the 1st inning. And just when the Bear Claws showed signs of getting back into the game, he allowed a solo shot to SS Johnny Shorts in the 5th.
But the bullpen came through in the clutch. Right-hander Timmy Almon (2-2) worked 2 perfect innings and earned the victory, while closer Oscar Buenaventura set Kalamazoo down in the 9th to pick up his 30th save.

JACKSONVILLE DRAGONS 10, KNOXVILLE SMOKIES 0
The day after clinching the Patriot League’s East title, the Knoxville Smokies showed clear signs of a celebration hangover, getting blasted by the Jacksonville Dragons, 10-0.
“I think the real victory is that the boys could stand up through all 9 innings,” said Smokies manager Snuff Wallace. “I think we drank all the beer in Florida last night.”
Knoxville starter Elicio Santana (19-6) seemed to be throwing batting practice, allowing six runs – including a mammoth homer by Dragons 3B Jake Kapoor – before departing after only 3 2/3 innings. The team then relied of a parade of second-tier reliever to make it through the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, the Smokies’ hitters went quietly against Jacksonville ace Biggs McGee (17-10), who threw an eight-hit complete-game shutout.
“I’ll bet they’re gonna go home and sleep off their hangovers,” said McGee afterward. “But they best not sleep on me. I’m a dangerous weapon.”

CALIFORNIA SHARKS 19, LAS VEGAS NARWHALS 7
Today’s game at MGM Jackpot was a farce, as the California Sharks terminated the Las Vegas Narwhals with extreme prejudice by a score of 19-7.
“I know it is almost football season,” said California manager Eduardo Aponte. “So we decided to put up a football score to get everyone in the mood for the season. I am only sorry we missed the extra point.”
The Sharks got off to a quick start, putting up five runs in the 1st as CF Justin Canales and LF Kenneth Mader bashed back-to-back jacks. Then in the 4th, after they’d chased Vegas starter Nick Armstrong (8-15), California sent 11 men to the plate in a seven-run explosion. The rest of the game was a mere formality.
Perhaps the most amazing stat is that the Sharks managed to leave 11 runners on base, despite scoring 19. “I hate to say it, but this game wasn’t as close as the score,” said Narwhals manager Benjamin Banks Mahoney. “They could have taken us for 25 or maybe even 30 if they’d kept their foot on the gas.”
California starter Kevin Conner (18-1) had a wobbly outing, but managed to make it through 5 innings and qualify for the win. LF Arthur Mealey was one of the few bright spots for Vegas, going 4-for-5 with a pair of homers.
